Man Utd experienced the worst season in history

The club of Old Trafford stadium started and ended the season with sad records.

Man Utd won 26 points in the first 17 games under coach Jose Mourinho – the worst performance since the 1990-1991 season (also 26 points, when the Premier League has not yet been born). The Portuguese commander only brought 176 points in more than two seasons  leading Man Utd. Together with this group, Man City (222 points), Tottenham (202), Chelsea (200) and Liverpool (196) all played better.

In the series of defeat, United were also crushed by Liverpool rivals. Opta’s statistics from 2003 indicate that Liverpool have never done much before Man Utd as in the 3-1 win at Anfield in 12/2018 (36 finishes). The victory helped Jurgen Klopp’s teachers and students remove the way Man Utd 19 points – the record after 17 rounds. After this match, Mourinho was fired.

After Liverpool, it was Man City’s turn to torment the neighbors. With a 0-2 loss in April 2019, coach Solskjaer became Man Utd’s fifth consecutive leader in the first Manchester derby. Pep Guardiola became the only coach to win the first three games at Old Trafford.

The most disappointing was David de Gea, who kept Man Utd going through the longest string of clean sheets in 49 years. A 0-2 defeat to Cardiff in the final round was the 15th consecutive game “Reds” conceding at least one goal. This season, they only kept clean sheets of two home games – the worst result since the 1962-1963 season. De Gea made many confusing mistakes in those goals.

Consequently, this season Man Utd was the most conceded in the history of Premier League, with 54 goals lost. This is the first time they conceded more than 50 goals in the tournament and also the worst achievement since the 1978-1979 season.

The bottom point in Man Utd’s away game came at Goodison Park. The 0-4 defeat against Everton was the fourth-largest defeat in the club’s history in the Premier League. After a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield, “Reds” lost tickets to the Champions League next season . This is the third time in the era of the Premier League, Man Utd cannot win tickets to the Champions League, after the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 seasons.
